Portrait of Gerardo Vendemia, curator of Banknotes.eu.

Banknotes.eu is curated by Gerardo Vendemia.

He is a mechanical engineer (Federico II di Napoli, 2011) and a numismatist whose professional activity centres on paper money — cataloguing, valuation, expert appraisal and editorial work — with particular attention to the Italian banknote field and to the euro.

His work for Banknotes.eu

Gerardo oversees the choice of subjects and the review of content, drawing on his experience in banknote cataloguing and research. His work includes comparing specialist material with official documentation, organising technical data and identifying the details most useful to collectors and general readers.

Professional background

Gerardo is the founder and managing director of Cartamoneta.com, the specialist platform for collectible Italian banknotes, incorporated as Cartamoneta.com Srl at the end of 2016 after operating as a sole proprietorship since 2010. Since September 2024 he leads the Numismatics Department at Capitolium Art, the Brescia auction house.

He is registered as a numismatic expert with the Chamber of Commerce of Rome (Periti ed Esperti, sub-category Numismatica e sfragistica, since 2016) and serves as a court-appointed technical consultant (Consulente Tecnico d’Ufficio) for the Tribunal of Rome (since 2024). His principal professional affiliations are Numismatici Italiani Professionisti (NIP), where he sits on the board of directors and is registered as a RENNPE expert, and the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), of which he is a life member.

Editorial work on banknotes

Gerardo is the author of the latest edition (XIII, 2026/2027) of La Cartamoneta Italiana — Corpus Notarum Pecuniariarum Italiae, the reference catalogue of Italian banknotes originally co-authored with Guido Crapanzano and Ermelindo Giulianini. In December 2025 he published Collezionare il futuro — Dalla passione per le banconote alla creazione di un personal brand (Libra Media & Services), with a preface by Francesco Giorgino.

On euro banknotes specifically, he was interviewed by RAI 1 UnoMattina Estate in September 2023 on the European Central Bank’s work towards the next euro banknote series, and by Il Messaggero in the same month on the legal framework that governs the exchange of old lira banknotes for euro.
